Learners have been self-directing projects in Writer’s Workshop and Quest. Writer’s Workshop emphasized the importance of the writing process as learners worked on hero-biographies. They’ve done research, outlined, and drafted, and now they’re self-/peer-editing. This process involves asking questions like “Is this my best work?”; “How does this compare to something else I’ve written?”; and “How does this compare to a world class example?”
Many learners thought they were finished with their biographies, but when they read their work out loud, decided to revise it with a focus on sentence fluency and organization of their ideas.
In quest, they asked the same question, “How do I know I’m finished?” When studying to gain citizenship, the answer is a little more straightforward: when you can pass a naturalization test. Learners worked as a studio and got 100% on a practice test with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Next week, they will know they completed their quest when their small group’s naturalization application is accepted by guides.
